multi-purpose remote

I am a ding-dong as my friend Ashley would say. I try to use my car door remote to open everything. I have tried to open the front door of my house while sitting in the car. Only to hear the clicking and realize what Im doing. Today, I tried to summons the elevator at work with it. I dont know why I cant comprehend that the remote only works for the car.
